Johnson City is the 8th largest city in Tennessee, and spans 3 different counties in Tennessee; Washington, Carter, and Sullivan (mainly Washington County).

As the principal city of the Johnson City Metropolitan Statistical Area, (covering Carter, Unicoi, and Washington counties), it is a prominent component of the Johnson City–Kingsport–Bristol, Tennessee–Virginia Combined Statistical Area (5th largest in Tennessee), which most people refer to as the “Tri-Cities” region.
